Why I Joined the NOA
I bring greetings on behalf of the National Optometric Association (NOA) board and its
members. As a former National Optometric Student Association member (NOSA), and
now an active NOA member for over 30 years, I would like to invite you to renew your
membership or become a member of one of the greatest optometric organizations in
the country.

NOA is unique in that our membership is predominately African American doctors. Our
primary mission is promoting the visual health of minority populations. One of our
landmark programs is the “Three Silent Killer” program, which emphasizes increasing
awareness of glaucoma, hypertension and diabetes among minority populations. The
program provides informative brochures and a speakers’ bureau as part of its
educational outreach to at-risk, minority populations.

Another major NOA activity is working with the schools and colleges of optometry to
help increase the diversity of their student populations. Due to NOA’s diligence, the
schools and colleges of optometry across the country have increased their enrollment
of underrepresented minority students, the appointment of minority optometric
educators, and/or the initiation of NOSA chapters. Also, may of the schools and
colleges have begun summer programs to expose minority students to the wonderful
career of optometry.

Our members are highly visible through out organized optometry and public health,
serving on local, state and national boards as officials of major optometric and health
organizations, and as national spokespersons for vision and public health campaigns.
Our members have received several outstanding recognitions: American Optometric
Association Optometrist (AOA) of the Year, Optometric Hall of Fame inductees and
most recently, the first optometrist as president of the American Public Health
Association (APHA).

We participate politically as advocates on Capitol Hill, as well as, locally with our
legislators on behalf of optometry and the patients we serve. There is power in
numbers and NOA needs your voice, your support to increase that power.
The NOA provides members with incredible networking sources. At our annual
convention you can volunteer to provide vision care services on site, enroll in
continuing education courses, and participate in buying group discounts, product
training and patient referral services.

Consider what the NOA can do for you and what you can do for the NOA. I am very
passionate about NOA. I hope my enthusiasm will inspire you to join us as we,
“Advance the Visual Health of Minority Populations.”

Thank you for your support.

Stephanie Johnson-Brown, O.D., M.Ed.
Director of Membership
NOA President-Elect
